The Polish word for Hello is ''Cześć'' - the sounds of 'cz' 'ś' and 'ć' might be a little challenging for your tongue, but don't be discouraged.
Practice makes perfect. So start saying ''Cześć'' to everyone around.
- Dzień dobry - Good morning, Good afternoon
- Dobry wieczór - Good evening
- Cześć - Hello
- Jak się masz
? - How are you ?
- Jak sie Pan ma
? - How are you sir ?
-Jak się Pani ma
? - How are you madam ?
Formal / informal - ''you''
In English you address people using ''you'' regardless of whether you know them or not;
In Polish when you are friends with someone, we address them using the form of you:
eg. ''how are you? '' - Jak się masz ?
However, when you are taking to a stranger, an older person, we address them using the form ''he/she + Pan / Pani''
e.g. instead of saying '' how are you sir ?''
we literally say '' how is he sir?'' or ''how is she madam ?'' - Jak się Pan ma ? or Jak się Pani ma ?
It may sound strange to talk to someone using the form he/she as if they weren't here in front of you, but it is considered as a sign of respect.
